And most people don't tend to go through stick after stick of lip balm in rapid succession, Ramhold says. "But the truth is that even if you use it habitually, it takes a long time to go through that much lip balm." For that reason, unless you're buying for family or friends, you probably don't need to grab the nine-count pack of lip balm on Costco shelves. However, you simply might not need 1,000 pills of, say, Kirkland Signature brand ibuprofen, unless you have a large household, Ramhold says.

There's a dark cloud hanging over Black Friday. A slew of retailers have issued tepid, cautious or downright disappointing fourth-quarter outlooks over the last few weeks, casting a pall over the crucial holiday season right as they gear up for the biggest shopping day of the year. Even Dick's Sporting Goods and Abercrombie & Fitch – which both raised their full-year guidance on Tuesday after strong third quarters – managed to underwhelm with their holiday forecasts. "As we look at recent trends across the retail industry, dollar sales are being driven by higher prices with consumers buying fewer units per trip. When asked about the upcoming holiday season, Cornell said it was too soon to weigh in on early sales, saying only that the company was "watching the trends carefully."

Cooking the perfect turkey is hard enough on its own without worrying about stuffing, cranberry sauce, casseroles and mashed potatoes. By the time dessert rolls around, the thought of making pie dough, blending a pumpkin pie filling and baking it to perfection can feel like a bridge too far. But if you want to outsource dessert to a supermarket near you, you'll need to choose from countless options. CNBC Make It tried a quintet of pies from a variety of national and regional chains to determine the best store-bought option. Staffers were asked to sample pie from the following five chains and select their favorite.

The commodities market is a "much more constructive place to invest" right now — and "integrated" names in the energy sector in particular are "extremely attractive," according to one portfolio manager. For now, Dunn said, he is "certainly concerned about and paying attention to the U.S. onshore shale era," when evaluating what equities to invest in. Integrated energy companies typically engage in the exploration, production, refinement, and distribution of oil and gas. "It's a U.S. company, but they have a lot of assets outside the U.S. and they have been investing outside the U.S.," he said. Costco on Tuesday reported quarterly earnings that topped Wall Street's expectations, as shoppers turned to the membership club for groceries but bought fewer big-ticket items. As of the end quarter, Costco had 32.3 million paid executive memberships, an increase of 981,000 since the end of the prior quarter. Those higher-tier members now account for slightly over 45% of all paid membership, Galanti said. Costco echoed a trend seen at rival retailers, including Walmart and Target : Groceries are the category driving sales. In the year-ago fiscal fourth quarter, comparable sales rose 15.8% in the U.S., but since then they have largely decelerated.

Costco still won't raise its annual membership fees, CFO Richard Galanti said Tuesday. Costco collected nearly $4.6 billion in fees for the past year, representing 72% of profits. Costco will not raise its annual membership fees, CFO Richard Galanti told analysts on the company's quarterly earnings call Tuesday. Because Costco sells merchandise at extremely low mark-ups, membership fees are a key way the company is able to turn a profit. Costco reported nearly $4.6 billion in revenue from membership fees last year, representing over 72% of the total annual profits of $6.3 billion.

Shares of BJ's Wholesale Club are ready to make a comeback against rival Costco, according to TD Cowen. "We like BJ's wholistic approach to club membership engagement which incorporates digital analytics & a complete basket value proposition with strong appeal to a younger demographic," analyst Oliver Chen wrote in a note Thursday. But Chen sees BJ's catching up as it leverages its customer base, grows stores and takes some market share. The average BJ's customer is 43 years old with a $104,000 income, compared to an average age of 45 years old and income of $103,000 for the typical Costco customer, according to TD Cowen. To be sure, TD Cowen is bullish on Costco as well, rating the warehouse competitor outperform and seeing it as a top pick in the sector.

All three major U.S stock indices pulled back this week, as earnings season wound down and retail earnings painted a mixed picture of the state of the economy. First-quarter earnings results from retailers this season have shown softer discretionary spending to be the primary headwind facing companies across numerous retail categories. If consumer spending declines too precipitously, it could help tip the U.S. economy into recession. With the end of another earnings season in sight, Wall Street's attention has turned to Washington and the debt ceiling deadline. Republican negotiators on Friday walked out of talks on raising the debt limit , abruptly ending a positive week of discussions that appeared to be leading toward a deal. Democrats and the White House have been pushing for a "clean" hike to the debt limit that would push the next deadline past the 2024 presidential election, while Republicans are pressing for spending cuts. Many investors believe this ongoing game of chicken over the debt limit is largely for show, since the U.S. has never defaulted on its debt obligations. U.S. President Joe Biden hosts debt limit talks with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and other congressional leaders in the Oval Office at the White House in Washington, U.S., May 9, 2023.
At least that's the thinking of a small but growing chorus of voices on Wall Street who outline the case for further stock market gains after both the S & P 500 and Nasdaq Composite touched nine-month highs this past week. The VIX was trading around 16-17 late this week, signaling no great fear among professional traders. Walmart and other retailers this week highlighted consumers are spending less freely, but they're still spending , and that drives two thirds of the economy. Even Mark Haefele, chief investment officer at UBS Global Wealth Management, wrote late this week that he has to entertain what could go right in markets, despite the fact his own view is fundamentally bearish. If that "upside scenario" happens, UBS sees global stocks moving 13% higher by the end of December, and the S & P 500 surging another 6% — to north of 4,400.
The big-box retailer also hopes by drawing shoppers for essentials like gallons of milk, it can nudge purchases of discretionary items that shoppers otherwise would not have bought. A 'Tarzhay' spin on groceriesOn a recent trip to a Minneapolis area grocery store, Gomez surveyed displays of colorful fruits and vegetables. In each of the past two fiscal years, Target has had double-digit sales growth in the food and beverage category. Target's grocery sales matter more as shoppers pull back in other areas. Grocery competition gets tougherCompetition for grocery shoppers has heated up, especially as consumers stretch their budgets.
